James Sallis is noteworthy for the polished prose of his slender volumes reflecting grim reality. Like his Lew Griffin novels, Salt River , starring Memphis ex-cop and ex-therapist John Turner, is every bit as elegant as its predecessors. Turner is still recovering from the trauma of his lover’s murder, but his grief doesn’t deter him from investigating whether a friend is responsible for the murder. Turner’s brutally honest investigation is heart-wrenching and memorable, as is this superb novel. [LM]
