Arruda introduces readers to Jade del Cameron, a World War I ambulance driver, who travels to Africa to fulfill a pledge made to a dying soldier. Despite a somewhat predictable plot, the East African setting resonates with mystery. Arruda provides a fascinating look at the clash of cultures in changing times against a wonderfully vivid backdrop. At the end of the story, I found myself looking forward to Jade's further adventures in 1920's Sub-Saharan Africa. [KO]
