What we're reading in March 2012

Ever wonder what the folks who work at a mystery bookstore like to read? Well, here's your answer. Each month we ask everyone here to pick a book, current or older, that they truly enjoyed and are enthusiastic about. Of course, if you visited the store, we'd tell you directly what we like but for those of you who can't come see us, this is the next best thing. Our special thanks to Judi for pulling this feature together and to all the staff who contributed their picks.

Presented here are the picks for this month, an archive of earlier months is available from the menu at the left.

What Lynn is reading

The Last Good Man ($26) by A.J. Kazinski

Another suspense coup of the publishing year is brought to you from—where else?—Arctic Scandinavia. The Last Good Man published under the pseudonym A.J. Kazinski, has already been released to great acclaim abroad, and now it’s our turn to share in the wealth. The authorial team, consisting of filmmaker Anders Ronnow Klarlund and writer Jacob Weinrich, has concocted an intricate conspiracy of universal international import, and it remains for Copenhagen detective Niels Bentzon and astrophysicist Hannah Lund to avert further disasters.

Murder at the Lanterne Rouge ($25) by Cara Black

A quick trip to Paris is just the thing for a blustery cold February. Readers of Cara Black’s books are familiar with her lead character, Aimee Leduc and her investigations of the Paris scene. Murder at the Lanterne Rouge involves a search for a missing girlfriend, dirty policemen (flics), illegal immigrant raids and cutting-edge science plus much more on the way to the denouement.

No Mark Upon Her ($24.99) by Deborah Crombie

I just loved Deborah Crombie’s latest, No Mark Upon Her. Deborah brings back the now husband and wife Met team, Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James and all their accompanying complex family relationships. And when the body of an Olympic rowing hopeful is found floating in the Thames, who just happens to be a detective on the Metropolitan Police Force, things get more complicated. With the aid of Gemma and a crack canine search and rescue team, Duncan must get to the bottom of the murder, which may have roots in the force itself. This is a must for not only Crombie fans, but rowers and dog lovers as well.

An ambitious real estate agent finds a card on his desk that reads, "modified." Soon enough inexplicable things begin to happen: a book arrives he didn't order, reservations are made that he didn't make. Slowly his life begins to unravel and he seems powerless to change the course of events. Who is behind this and why is the fascinating question you'll be asking all the way to the end of this highly original thriller?

Save Me ($14.99) by Lisa Scottoline

Lisa Scottoline’s Save Me is a gut-wrenching tale of terror that rips along until you realize that it is the middle of the night and you just finished a remarkable story. Pitch-perfect dialogue from the mean girls to the killer lawyers enhances a story as contemporary as the moral dilemmas on Oprah. In fact it is the media scrutiny that for better or worse compels this brave mother through a case of complex corruption and murder. Not to be missed. Also not be be missed—Lisa’s event at MLB on Sunday, April 22 at 1 pm
