What we're reading in March 2008

Ever wonder what the folks who work at a mystery bookstore like to read? Well, here's your answer. Each month we ask everyone here to pick a book, current or older, that they truly enjoyed and are enthusiastic about. Of course, if you visited the store, we'd tell you directly what we like but for those of you who can't come see us, this is the next best thing. Our special thanks to Judi for pulling this feature together and to all the staff who contributed their picks.

Presented here are the picks for this month, an archive of earlier months is available from the menu at the left.

What Judi is reading

The Night Following ($22) by Morag Joss

British author Morag Joss's brilliantly conceived, finely executed novel, Half Broken Things captured the CWA's Silver Dagger Award and this her newest release, The Night Following, deserves the same recognition. In an instant, one woman is dead and two marriages are shattered. A hit and run accident kills Ruth Mitchell and leaves her husband bereft. The driver is not caught but unable to forgive herself, she seeks out the dead woman’s husband. At first she merely stands in the shadow’s watching him but soon that is not enough. A deeply disturbing and insightful tale.

What Judi is also reading

The Penguin Who Knew Too Much ($23.95) by Donna Andrews

I never tire of this series and it’s delightful daffy set of characters. Donna Andrew’s newest in her Meg Langslow Mystery series is just as funny and endearing as the first, Murder with Peacocks. While planning their own surprise wedding and moving into their newly remodeled and of course, not yet finished new home, Meg and Michael encounter unexpected wedding gifts. First, there are penguins in the lake and then a dead body appears in the basement, followed by llamas, sloths and hyenas from the bankrupt local zoo and the usual craziness of relatives everywhere. You’ll love it!

What Kathy S. is reading

Murder Melts in Your Mouth ($22.95) by Nancy Martin

It's another great adventure with the Blackbird Sisters. All your favorites are back, including Mick, the resident bad boy and heartthrob, and they are joined by some fabulous new characters. And guess who's back? The Blackbird parents! Yikes. You'll see how some of these apples didn't fall far from the tree. Add a healthy dose of chocolate, and it's another treat, perfect for a winter read.

What Mary Alice is reading

Friends in High Places ($13.95) by Marne Davis Kellogg

I just love these Kick Keswick books both for the delightful character of reformed jewel thief Kick and for the gorgeous settings in the hot spots of Europe, the US and the Caribbean. This time out Kick finds herself facing an old adversary who threatens to expose the many replicas that she has left in place of the real jewels she has stolen. A fast-moving, glitzy series with lots of humor and a charming protagonist.

What Richard is reading

Vinnie's Head ($13.95) by Marc Lecard

A truly funny, over the top crime novel told in first person by Johnnie LoDuco, Long Island’s most inept small-time crook. The title refers to Johnnie’s childhood best friend and the head is what he hooks while fishing. Johnnie soon enough finds himself embroiled in Vinnie’s plot as he is pursued, carrying the head in a garbage bag, by thugs, Vinnie’s girlfriend, a bounty hunter and a friendly serial killer. Completely hilarious criminal hijinks
