What we're reading in October 2007

Ever wonder what the folks who work at a mystery bookstore like to read? Well, here's your answer. Each month we ask everyone here to pick a book, current or older, that they truly enjoyed and are enthusiastic about. Of course, if you visited the store, we'd tell you directly what we like but for those of you who can't come see us, this is the next best thing. Our special thanks to Judi for pulling this feature together and to all the staff who contributed their picks.

Presented here are the picks for this month, an archive of earlier months is available from the menu at the left.

What Kathy S. is reading

An Ice Cold Grave ($23.95) by Charlaine Harris

This is the third book in Charlaine's Harper Connelly series, and, like her Sookie Stackhouse books, they all keep getting better. Harper can sense dead people, courtesy of a lightening strike when she was 15 years old. So she and Tolliver - her brother who isn't really her brother - travel around finding corpses for families and for law enforcement. This time, she finds more than anyone bargained for, and ends up facing a serial killer. Harper's voice is clear and surprisingly hopeful and light, given her calling, and it is quite a contrast to the heartbreaking plot. A perfect read for October.

What Judi is reading

Clubbable Woman ($14.95) by Reginald Hill

Thank you Felony and Mayhem for making this first in the series available to us. Home from the Rugby club after taking a nasty knock in a match, Connon finds his wife even more uncommunicative than usual. After passing out on his bed for five hours, he comes downstairs to discover communication has been cut off forever -- by a hole in the middle of her forehead. Down at the club, passions run high, on and off the field. This is a home game for Detective Superintendent Andrew Dalziel who knows all the players, male and female. But Sergeant Peter Pascoe, whose loyalties lie with another code, has a few ideas of his own.

What Mary Katherine is reading

Absent Friends ($12) by S.J. Rozan

This stand-alone by the author of the Lydia Chin and Bill Smith mystery series is the closest I have come to being able to read about the victims and aftermath of 9/11. It's a story of friends who grew up together in a Staten Island neighborhood, and how the tragedy changed their lives. The book steps back and forth between the 1960s and 2001 and tells the story of the attack through these vivid characters. This is not a beach read - but if you are ready to read a brilliant and moving tale of the time, this is an amazing choice.

What Richard is reading

Garden of the Dead ($14) by William Brodrick

A fabulous and intricate sequel to Broderick’s debut The 6th Lamentation and featuring Father Anselm, the barrister turned monk. The death of a young lawyer from Anselm’s old firm starts off the action as Anselm tries to decipher clues that trace back to an old case that both the victim and he were involved with. Broderick’s evocation of place and character is spot-on and the carefully woven plot unrolls seamlessly as we move toward an unexpected conclusion.
