Dear %%First Name%%,
August-September MLB News Available for Download
For all of our Go Green customers (and anyone else reading this email newsletter) the August-September edition of the MLB News is now available for download.
Just click on this link and you'll see the August-September News in your web browser just as it appears in print. If you don't care to read the News on your computer screen, simply print it out. Be sure to use the Adobe Reader print button not the print button for your web browser.
Comma-kaze Squad, I'm counting on you guys
I am once again calling for the assistance of our tireless volunteer proofreaders--The Comma-kaze Squad--to come to my aid in exterminating all grammatical and typographical errors from the August-September News before it goes to the printers Sunday night.
My offer of a $5 Gift Certificate to anyone who found typos in the News still stands Our thanks to our army of volunteer proofreaders and our hopes that you'll be equally motivated this time. Good hunting.
The August-September News is available right now on the website but we won't be sending it to the printer until Sunday. You can win a $5 Gift Certificate if you can find a typo or error in the News before we send it out.
An important note: I've changed the way we denote authors and titles in the News. Authors are bolded, titles are italicized. Bolding of authors only applies to first use in the review, not to subsequent repetitions.
Here are the rules:
These are typos or errors:
- Misspelled words
- Reviews missing the author, publisher, price or title
- Clear grammatical errors such as verb-object agreement, that/which and the like
- Titles of books not italicized
- First reference to author's name not bolded
- Titles in the Also Noted section are not italicized nor are authors bolded.
- In the Festival Insert, author names are bold when first mentioned
- MLB style for possesives formed from proper names is to add an apostrophe-s to the name. Thus: Thomas's, Grimes's etc.
These are not errors
- Neither titles nor authors are italicized/bolded in the Also Noted article
- Sentence fragments ("A great read" is a stylistic signature of the News)
- Words or phrases that you might consider infelicitous, cliched, hackneyed and the like
- Any other "error" which the editor, in his total discretion, doesn't think is an error
- Any and all errors relating to the use of commas. I'm sorry but we received a number of these, often contradictory, and it seems that no one agrees on the correct use of commas.
- MLB style identifies books not in a series as standalones, spelled that way
- MLB style spells whodunnit just like that
- descriptions in the Also Noted section frequently omit verbs or articles for (the) sake of brevity, thus: man kills wife, gets away or cop on brink breaks down.
- White space at the top of, for example, page 3 is intentional. If you print pages 2 and 3 and place them side by side you'll see why.
- Hyphenation issues are handled automatically by InDesign. While it is possible for me to go in and change individual line breaks its a huge amount of work and I've just decided not to worry about it. You shouldn't either.
How to win your $5 Gift Certificate
- Download and read the MLB News from the website
- Find an error (or errors)
- Send us an email before 5 pm on Sun. June 15. You can simply reply to this email or use our Contact Form.
If you are one of the many folks who in the past have given time to proofreading I want to express my profound gratitude for your efforts which have made my life easier and improved the quality of our MLB News.
Good Hunting.
