MLB closed Sunday, June 7

The Oakmont-Verona Twin Boro 5K run will take place starting at 1:30 on Sunday June 7. As this makes Allegheny River Boulevard and Allegheny Avenue impassable for most of the afternoon we're not going to have Sunday hours on that date. Regular Sunday hours, Noon to 4 pm resume the following Sunday.

Anthony Award nominations announced

The Bouchercon World Mystery Convention has announced the nominees for the 2009 Anthony Awards. These nominations, in the category of Best Novel, Best First Novel and Best Paperback Original, were voted upon by those registered for the convention. The Anthony Awards will be chosen by vote of the convention attendees in October.

Tickets to the Far East - $16 to $18

I still remember fondly my first exposure to James Clavell though the book Shogun in the '70s. An eye-opening trip to feudal Japan filled with epic events, the unique culture of the samurai and larger than life characters.

Over a thirty year career, Clavell wrote five books in his Far East series that went from 16th century Japan to early 19th century China, from WW II Singapore to Hong Kong in the '60s. All of these have been reissued in beautiful new editions priced from $16 to $18. With warmer weather and vacations coming up, any of them would make for absorbing reading sitting in the shade with a gin and tonic at hand.

We're pleased to announce that two of the finest crime novelists around will be at Mystery Lovers Bookshop on May 31. Please join us for a unique event with Michael Connelly and George Pelecanos, each with a new book.

We originally announced this event as a 2 pm talk and signing at the Oakmont Carnegie Library. That event will still take place but it is sold out. If you have already purchased tickets, please join us at 2 pm at the library.

We have arranged for the authors to do a signing at 4 pm at the book store to accomodate those fans who were not able to get into the library event.

If you would like a signed copy of either Michael Connelly's The Scarecrow or George Pelecanos's The Way Home, please order now and we'll ship you book right after the event on May 31.

Craig Johnson Book Club Dinner-June 8

Western mystery writer Craig Johnson will join us on June 8 for a Book Club Dinner at 6:30 pm. We've put together a lip-smacking menu of ribs and pulled port barbecue as the perfect accompaniment to Craig's latest book to feature Wyoming sheriff Walt Longmire, Dark Horse.
