Mysteries involving works of art

Why the fascination with art history? We don't know but we keep on enjoying it.

Kathy S., Edgewood PA

The Chrysalis ($6.99) by Heather Terrell

Pittsburgh lawyer Heather Terrell expertly weaves Nazi wartime thefts and expert legal twists into a suspenser that is elegant. The 17th century artist, the collector and the brilliant New York lawyer, educated in Medieval history, archetypes and symbols, Mara Coyne are all actors on different stages in this historical thriller that will leave you breathless at the fine work of this new voice on the scene.

The Flanders Panel ($15) by Arturo Perez-Reverte

A great art world mystery centered around a fifteenth century painting of a chess game. Julia is a young art restorer who is trying to decipher the mystery of "Who killed the knight." This antique mystery seems to be endangering her 20th century life. Perez-Reverte writes elegantly and the stories he tells in this and his other books are compelling

Doors Open ($24.99) by Ian Rankin

Rebus may have retired but Ian Rankin hasn't as he proves in this dynamic crime novel about a man with too much time on his hands and a plan for the perfect crime: robbing the National Gallery of Scotland.

Busy Bodies ($13.95) by Joan Hess this one's funny, too

When Joan Hess introduced the world to Claire Malloy, the Arkansas bookseller/sleuth in Stangled Prose, the world of mystery readers loved the funny little whodunits in this exotic small Southern town. In the tenth book we revisit the friendly street of earlier adventures now agog over the latest scandalous neighbor’s shenanigans. Is it interactive environmental art or pornographic junk? The answer to this query and the identity of the murderer who torches the artwork and kills the artist’s wife is to be found at the end of this hilarious adventure. Along the way Hess fans will delight in the inclusion of the strange mystery writer who weaves through the plot. Darn good yarn!

Landscape of Lies ($14.95) by Peter Watson

A terrific mix of art history and action as an art expert and a young woman race to decipher the clues in a 16th century painting that is really a treasure map. Full of fascinating detail and narrow escapes.
