Post-WW I mysteries
from Ricki L., Forest Hills, NY
The War to End All Wars had an enormous effect on all of society, particularly in England.
The sense of post-was England and the suffering is amazing--even as a history major, the war and agony have never been so clear.

The role of women in England was enormously enlarged with new opportunities and rights directly related to the enormous male deaths in the was. The character, herself, is not only smart and a go-getter but a very "modern" woman, unafraid of using and showing her intelligence. I never connected the loss of the male population with a rise in women's freedoms including the right to purchase land and homes.

Unlike the others, this series begins just at the beginning of World War 1 and is mystery and spy triller--two subjects for the price and reading of one--

"Heavier" than the others and set primarily during World War 1 as opposed to post World War 1, the series (of which this one is the first book) won the Booker Award. Powerful reading handling many difficult subjects including politics of war and class.
