Gardening mysteries

from Margo N., Oakmont PA

Almost as good as reading seed catalogs in February

Death in the Garden ($14.95) by Elizabeth Ironside

In 1925, Diana Pollexfen was found innocent of killing her husband, but the accusation shadowed the rest of her life. Sixty years later, Diana's grandniece resolves to determine just who did kill George Pollexfen in that sunlit garden between the wars.

The White Garden ($15) by Stephanie Barron

If you’ve got a taste for an intelligent thriller with a literary background you’ll love this tale that delves into the truth behind Virginia Woolf’s drowning death in 1941. A young American landscape designer comes to Vita Sackville-West’s former home to study the garden of the title only to become entangled in the mysteries behind Woolf’s death. Rich historical detail and a compelling mystery will keep you entertained throughout.

Savage Garden ($14) by Mark Mills

When Adam Banting’s Cambridge don encourages him to write a monograph on the Docci Gardens outside of Florence, little does Adam know that murders, past and present are linked to this historical garden. As Adam delves into the garden’s secrets, he uncovers layers of evil that rise from the past to threaten the present Docci family’s future.

Summer of the Big Bachi ($6.99) by Naomi Hirahara

With an Edgar award for Snakeskin Shamisen, Naomi Hirahara is getting a reissue of earlier books in the Mas Arai series beginning with the first. Mas is a 69 year old Japanese-American gardener in Los Angeles. He’s a widower and a survivor of Hiroshima and it is the latter that provides the spark for the plot as a fellow survivor disappears forcing Mas to confront secrets he has kept for fifty years.

Pushing Up Daisies ($6.99) by Rosemary Harris

Master gardener Rosemary Harris gives us a breath of spring with her debut mystery. Ex-media exec Paula Holliday is trying to eke out a living in Connecticut designing and maintaining gardens. Trading a Blackberry for a hoe, Paula unearths a mummified body in the garden of a local landmark, and with the help of a cast of delightful characters, she’s well on the way to figuring out the mystery of a mummified body.
